Road Trip Prerolls -- California Launch

We grew up here.
We saved the seeds.
We came back.

A story about Humboldt, mountain grows, a house raid, a mountain lion, a Phish show in Indio, and a bunch of seeds that finally found the soil they were always meant for.

How It Started

Nineteen years old, a trim job, and a Phish show in Indio.

In the fall of 2008, I moved to Humboldt County at nineteen to trim weed. Two growers I'd met gave me a job and a place to sleep, and somewhere in the middle of that first season, they took me to my first Phish show out in Indio. I had no idea what I was getting into, with any of it.

I ended up staying. I enrolled at Humboldt State and got a botany degree, which mostly meant I had a formal framework for things I was already learning hands-on in the hills. The university was great. But the real education was watching experienced growers work, asking questions, and paying attention to which plants in a row were doing something different.

"I wasn't a grower yet. I was just a kid with a trim job and a lot of questions."

I started picking up seeds. Not strategically. Just whenever a plant had something going on that felt worth keeping, I'd put the seeds somewhere safe. A jar, a ziplock, an envelope. No real plan beyond the feeling that these were worth holding onto.

The Mountains

The Prop-215 Years

Mountain grows, a collection of seeds, and a few stories we can tell now.

Under Prop-215, I ran grows in the mountains with a rotating cast of friends and collaborators. It was genuinely semi-legal, which meant it was also genuinely stressful. One morning the sheriff's department showed up at my house. They went through everything. We didn't go to jail, but it was the kind of morning that makes you think hard about where you're putting your energy.

There were mountain lions. Plural. One walked through camp at dusk and nobody said anything for about ten minutes afterward. There were long seasons and short ones, good harvests and ones that didn't go the way we'd planned. There was a lot of driving on roads that probably didn't have names. It wasn't glamorous. It was genuinely beautiful, though.

"The mountain lion was maybe fifteen feet away. We just stood there. What are you supposed to do?"

Through all of it, I kept collecting seeds. Whenever a plant stood out, I saved what it had. Over eight or nine years that turned into a real collection, though I wouldn't have called it that at the time. I just knew I had seeds from plants that I thought were special, and I didn't want to lose track of them. I wasn't breeding anything yet. That came later.

2020 Michigan

The Legal Market, and Finally, the Breeding

We built a preroll lab in Northern Michigan. Then we finally started working with the seeds.

After California, I ended up in Michigan, where we started building what became Road Trip Brands. Prerolls, then a sister packaging company, then an equipment leasing model that let us work with partners in other states. It grew into something real. We didn't plan it to be what it is. We just kept solving the next problem.

Three years into running the preroll lab in Kalkaska, I finally had the time, the space, and the right setup to start actually working with the seeds I'd been carrying around since Humboldt. That's when the breeding started. Not in the mountains, not during the Prop-215 years. In a legal grow space in Northern Michigan, with a decade-plus of collected genetics and a botany degree that turned out to be useful after all.

The six crosses we're launching in California are the result of that work. Five sativa dominant, each one tracing back to seeds that came through years of paying attention to plants in the Emerald Triangle.

California Launch

The seeds we carried out of the Emerald Triangle are going back into California ground.

Our California partner farms under an oCal certification, which is the state's equivalent of USDA Organic for cannabis. It's rare. Most operators in CA have moved away from the kind of farming that certification requires. Our partner hasn't. The farm runs on 100% living soil, sun-grown in Northern California, and it's the right place to grow what we've been working on.

We're not showing up in California as some out-of-state brand asking for a shelf. We grew up here. We know what this place produces when it's done right. We just took a long detour through a raid, a lot of mountain roads, a legal market in Michigan, and three years of breeding before we had something worth bringing back.

"It took a while. But the seeds are finally in the right soil."

If you're looking for the best sativa prerolls in California and you care about where the plant came from and how it was grown, this is what Road Trip CA is: oCal certified, living soil, genetics that were earned over a long time in this exact part of the world.

The Genetics

Six proprietary crosses. Five sativa dominant.
Four trace back to a single anchor.

These are the in-house crosses from three years of breeding in Michigan, now going into oCal certified living soil in Northern California alongside four proven cultivars from the partner farm. All of it is sun-grown. All of it is certified. If you're searching for the best sativa prerolls in California, the genetics are where it starts.

Sativa Dominant -- Proprietary Cross

Spanish Blue

Jack Sparrow x Baja Blast

Classic Haze character from Jack Sparrow runs into the blue candy sweetness of Baja Blast. Cerebral, long-lasting, built to read premium before anyone reads the label.

Hybrid -- Program Anchor

Sour Grapes

Sundae Pie x Sour D

Dessert weight pulled back to old-school Sour Diesel zip. The anchor of the whole program -- four of the six crosses here trace back to this one.

Program Anchor

Sativa Dominant -- Proprietary Cross

Trop Fumez

Jack Sparrow x Candy Fumez

Classic Haze backbone running through a tropical candy filter. Bright, aromatic, the bag-appeal play that also actually delivers on effect.

Sativa Dominant -- Proprietary Cross

Hot Honey

Sour Grapes x Honey Papaya

Anchor genetics crossed into stonefruit and warmth. Soft, golden, faintly savory. The one that gets people who thought they knew what they wanted.

Sativa Dominant -- Proprietary Cross

Grape on Grape

Sour Grapes x Sundae Pie

Grape doubled down on itself. The deepest, most saturated flavor in the lineup, built for the person chasing terps and not interested in anything subtle.

Sativa Dominant -- Proprietary Cross

Sour Mango

Sour Grapes x Fembot

Anchor genetics turned tropical and lean. The daytime winner from the whole program: the pheno hunt's brightest, most aromatic cut. The one you reach for in the morning.

Also at Launch

The first release includes four California classic cultivars from the partner farm, all oCal certified and sun-grown in living soil. They get their own section below.

The First Release -- California Classics

Paying homage to the strains that built
California cannabis culture.

Before the proprietary crosses are ready, the Road Trip CA launch runs on four cultivars that need no introduction to anyone who has spent time with California weed. Blue Dream, Key Lime OG, White Runtz, Gelato. All oCal certified. All grown in living soil by our partner farm in Northern California. These are strains we grew up around. It felt right to start here.

Emerald Triangle Classic

Blue Dream

Blueberry x Haze

The strain that introduced a generation of people to what Northern California cannabis could be. Slightly sativa dominant, sweet berry aroma carrying the Blueberry parentage into a Haze-driven cerebral effect that lasts longer than most expect. We grew up around Blue Dream. It put Humboldt on the map for a lot of people, us included. There is no more fitting place to start.

Sativa Dominant Cerebral Sweet Berry

California OG Heritage

Key Lime OG

OG Kush lineage

The OG family is what California built its reputation on, and Key Lime OG is one of the more interesting expressions of it. Citrus forward, lime and pine on the nose, with the earthy weight of good Kush genetics underneath. It's the kind of strain that reminds you why OG became the dominant lineage in the California market and stayed there. Clean, grounded, familiar in the best way.

Hybrid OG Lineage Citrus and Pine

Modern California Classic

White Runtz

Zkittlez x Gelato

Became a phenomenon in the California market for genuinely good reasons. The bag appeal is real, the sweet candy terpene profile is consistent, and the balanced effect lands well across a wide range of consumers. We're growing it in oCal certified living soil, which is the way it should be grown if you want to taste what the genetics are actually capable of. Most people haven't had it done this way.

Balanced Hybrid Sweet Candy High Bag Appeal

Bay Area Origin

Gelato

Thin Mint GSC x Sunset Sherbet

The Cookie Fam and Sherbinski cross that became one of the most recognized names in California cannabis and earned it. Dessert-forward terpenes, deep color, a balanced hybrid effect that leans heavy without putting you down. Gelato showed what California hybridization could do when the genetics and the grower both knew what they were doing. We try to hold up our end of that bargain.

"I moved to Humboldt at nineteen with basically nothing. Spent years out there figuring it out with good people. Saved a lot of seeds. Eventually ended up in Michigan building a company. And now those seeds are going back into California ground. It's a weird, long, good story."
